This Sunday most of us will gather ‘round the television, share pizza and beer with our loved ones, and watch the most popular football game of the year. Whether you’re a fan of a participating team or not, you’ll most likely shell out some cash to participate in this annual ritual; and so will the rest of the world. According to the National Retail Federation a whopping 173 million people will be watching the game on February 5, up from 171 million from last year. With this many fans there are sure to be plenty of parties, and plenty of spending to go along with the festivities.

71.3% of fans surveyed plan to spend money on food and beverages, 8.6% will buy team apparel, and 6.4% will purchase decorations. 5.1% will even upgrade their television solely for game day, and another 2.4% will purchase new furniture to accommodate more guests. Total consumer spending for the items mentioned above is expected to reach $63.87 per person – and with 173 million fans, this adds up to over $11 billion in consumer spending, all for one day.

Spending in the host city, Indianapolis, began back in 2005 when they broke ground for their new stadium that opened in 2008. $720 million was spent building Lucas Oil Stadium, with the host team (the Indianapolis Colts) footing $100 million of the bill. The state of Indiana was left with raising the rest of the funds, doing so through increased taxes on food and beverage sales, auto rentals and hotels, among other items. PricewaterhouseCoopers expects game day spending in the Indianapolis area to reach $150 million.

The higher the confidence in their personal financial standing and the economy as a whole, the more consumers will be willing to shell out for these big events. This predicted increase in spending from last year (which totaled $10 billion), should equate to a boost to the economy, and is another sign that consumer confidence is growing.
